They are here and they want to meet the neighbors. After an old tree is removed from the ground, three teenagers come across a special rock with a beautiful crystalline center in their backyard. The rock enthralls them and they dig up the family’s lawn in a search for more of the precious stones. However, instead of stones, they find the Gate: a hidden underground chamber that holds the secret of centuries and the vengeance of eternity. Their actions inadvertently liberate a horde of nasty, pint-sized demons from the hole and what follows is a classic battle between good and evil as the three kids struggle to overcome a nightmarish hell that is literally taking over the Earth.

STEPFATHER(s) – September/October

One of the most-wanted classic horror films on DVD finally makes its U.S. disc debut as Shout! Factory brings Joseph Ruben’s 1987 psychochiller THE STEPFATHER to disc this fall.

Starring Terry O’Quinn in a career-launching role as a man obsessed with heading the perfect family who marries into fatherless families—only to kill them when they don’t live up to his standards, THE STEPFATHER will street October 13 to tie in to the theatrical release of the remake. The DVD will feature a new high-definition widescreen transfer and include a number of special features, including audio commentary by and interviews with producer Jay Benson and actress Jill Schoelen (who plays the villain’s suspicious stepdaughter), plus more to be announced.

In related news: Synapse has made it pubic that they are going to be releasing STEPFATHER 2 to coincide with the remake.

“We’re releasing STEPFATHER 2 on September 29 to tie in with the remake of the original scheduled for October – we’re putting that one on the fast track. We’re big fans of the movie, and we jumped at the chance to get it. We will be porting over all the supplements from the previous disc,” released by Miramax in 2003, and since discontinued; these bonuses include an audio commentary by director Jeff Burr and producer Darin Scott. “There will also be additional extras, including a featurette from Red Shirt Pictures containing interviews with the cast and crew, deleted scenes and the trailer. We’re looking into doing a new transfer, and checking on the materials now.”

Audition’s 10th Anniversary

Outcast Cinema has announced that they have been working on the 10th anniversary disc of Takashi Miike’s Audition. It will be released by Shout! Factory on both dvd and blu-ray with a ton of extras. This will be a must for all die hard Miike fans out there. Pre-orders should be avaiable soon.

Extras include

• Feature-length audio commentary with Miike and screenwriter Daisuke Tengan, who is also scripting Miike’s upcoming remake of the chanbara classic 13 ASSASSINS. Film writer and Eiga Hi-Ho contributor Masato Kobayashi moderates the Japanese-language (and English-subtitled) commentary track.

Late 08′ saw the start of new dvd company MYA Communications, specializing in horror/euro-cult. Since their start up this up and coming company has been releasing cult and long-awaited titles like Argento’s FOUR FLIES ON GREY VELVET. This is surely a company to keep an eye on and to support. With tons of releases currently slated for the upcoming months, including DEVIL IN THE FLESH, ARIZONA COLT RETURNS, DINNER WITH A VAMPIRE, ITALIAN SEX, MAFIA CONNECTION, and THE CASE OF THE SCORION’S TALE there should be something for everyone.

A great drama/comedy chronicling the end of the disco-era through the musings of a group of Manhattan’s elite Ivy League socialites. The first version of this film is out of print and is extremely rare (goes for over $100 on the amazon marketplace). I have preordered the shit out of this.

By the way, Criterion Collection’s treatment of Stillman’s first film “Metropolitan” is GREAT.

Bad Lieutenant – Special Edition – July 28th

No doubt to stir up interest in Werner Herzog’s upcoming “Bad Lieutenant: Port of Call New Orleans”, Lionsgate will be releasing a special edition disc of Abel Ferrera’s original crooked cop film.
From the Lions Gate press release:
“Bad Lieutenant debuts in a Special Edition DVD this July from Lionsgate. The film is directed by Abel Ferrara (The Funeral) and stars Academy Award® nominee Harvey Keitel (Best Supporting Actor, Bugsy, 1991), who gives a searing performance as an out-of-control police detective on a collision course with disaster. The Bad Lieutenant: Special Edition contains all new special features, including audio commentary by Director Abel Ferrara and Director of Photography Ken Kelsch and a retrospective documentary, and is encased in brand new O-card packaging.

Keitel is a nameless New York cop, hopelessly addicted to drugs, gambling, and sex. As he makes his way to various crime scenes, he is concerned only with taking bets from his fellow cops on the outcome of the ongoing National League playoffs. As his bad decisions drive him deeper into debt, his life becomes a surreal hell, with a constant intake of crack, coke, heroin, and booze eroding what remains of his sanity. Port of Call New Orleans will feature Nicholas Cage in the title roll of the Bad Lieutenant with support for Eva Mendes, Val Kilmer, Xzibit (!!!), Fairuza Balk, Jennifer Coolidge, and Brad Dourif.

At the Academy Awards in 2009, Herzog stated that he has never seen Ferrara’s film, saying “I haven’t seen it, so I can’t compare it. It has nothing to do with it.”

After the film was first announced, Ferrara was quoted as saying “As far as remakes go, … I wish these people die in Hell. I hope they’re all in the same streetcar, and it blows up.” When asked later for his response to Ferrara’s statements, Herzog stated that he does not know who Ferrara is, saying “I’ve never seen a film by him. I have no idea who he is.”

Can’t wait to see how this pans out – as for the re-release – I will most definitely be checking it out – its a great film.
